Microsoft reverses stance on IE8 standards compliance default behavior

The hardest thing in the world to understand is the income tax.   - Albert Einstein From the IE Blog : "We’ve decided that IE8 will, by default, interpret web content in the most standards compliant way it can. This decision is a change from what we’ve posted previously." The Explanation They are saying that thinking about IE8’s behavior with their published interoperability principles in mind, interpreting web content in the most standards compliant way possible is a better thing to do. And more: "this step clearly removes this question as a potential legal and regulatory issue ". In other words, instead of the various quirks mode flags and what-not, we'd rather not get sued, so we'll just default to the best standards compliance we can provide. "Quirks Mode" describes how modern browsers (like IE, Firefox, Safari, and Opera) all have different modes for interpreting the content of a web page: Quirks and Standards.  Basically, all the browser...

Windows Live Folders debut

Looks like Microsoft has opened up its Windows Live Folders offering here . Nothing earth-shaking, but it has a nice clean user interface and offers 500MB of free storage. You can store documents, music etc. in various folders, send links to friends, make it public, private or shared only to certain people. You can also control read or contribute settings on a folder for others. Standard HTTPInputFile control uploads, no fancy ActiveX or other junk to bomb-out your browser. Here is an example link to a file I have in one of my "public" folders: http://cid-683c01ce35fb357d.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public/pondpic.jpg BTW -- they have an IFRAME snippet that "embeds" a Live Drive (yep - they've changed the name already) item in your page. You want to be very careful about using these - I had one in this post and then every time I'd load this UnBlog in my browser, the little booger would take control and redirect everybody to the Live Drive page. DOH! I...

Usability Studies, My Butt -- and Office 2007 Installation Woes

If you have worked with Microsoft products to any degree (I have, I was actually a beta tester for Microsoft's BASIC COMPILER back in 1985 - before some current script kiddies were even born) - then you know that Microsoft (and, to be fair, many other vendors) has developed a finely - honed penchant for buzzwords and name-changing. A big ingredient of this seems to be the year (hopefully) that the software was introduced. I think "Windows 95" was the first one, but I could be mistaken. Followed of course, by Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Office 97, Office 2000, Office 2003, and now - (gasp!) - Office 2007. Frankly, with all the issues in the last few years, I wish they'd just learn to drop the year off the names and come out with it WHEN IT'S READY. I speak with great trepidation, since the RTM is downloading from my MSDN Subscription as I write this. It's taken a long time to get used to some of the nice features of say, Excel 2003 - features...
